Conductor Profile:

Brian Current believes that adventurous music is for everyone. For more than two decades, the Juno Award-winning conductor and composer has worked to bring new music to audiences, champion composers and performers from all backgrounds, and welcome listeners of every level of musical experience. His work is driven by a belief in music's power to spark curiosity, bring people together, and open new possibilities.

Brian has been artistic director and principal conductor of New Music Concerts in Toronto since 2021, main conductor of Continuum Contemporary Music since 2011, and director of the New Music Ensemble at the Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory since 2007. Across these roles, he has championed the music of more than 100 Canadian composers and helped bring over two dozen commissioned world premieres to the stage.

His conducting has taken him to orchestras and festivals across Canada, Europe, and the United States, including Canadian ensembles Symphony Nova Scotia, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Soundstreams, and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. At the Glenn Gould School, he has introduced hundreds of emerging professional musicians to contemporary music, encouraging them to approach unfamiliar sounds and ideas with curiosity, imagination, and confidence.

Also an internationally recognized composer, Brian brings a composer's perspective to the podium. His performances combine meticulous attention to detail and clarity of gesture with an infectious energy and a deep commitment to the music of our time. He approaches conducting as a collaborative art, working closely with composers and performers to bring new musical ideas to life.
